An animation of the Phases of the Moon. The moon takes twenty nine and a half days to cycle from a new moon to a full moon. The phases are caused by the rotation of the moon around the Earth. As the moon rotates around the planet, the Sun lights the moon from a different side, creating the different phases. Since the moon doesn't rotate, one side is constantly facing the planet. The moon appears to get bigger in the photo because it is actually getting closer to the planet. The wobble in the animation is due to the fact that the gravity of Earth on the Moon is greater when the Moon is closer, causing it to otbit faster. |

Architect George R. Mann's design for the Arkansas State Capitol, located in Little Rock, Arkansas, United States. However, the image is labeled as the Montana State Capitol because it was the winning entrant in the first design competition for that building. It was never actually built, and Mann resubmitted it for the Arkansas building. Restoration: Jake Wartenberg |
