Valued pictures are images that add significantly to articles, either by illustrating article content particularly well, or by providing information relevant to a particlular topic. The images on Wikipedia that are http://wiki.w2n.net/wikipedia/Valued pictures should illustrate a Wikipedia article in such a way as to add significantly to that article, according to the valued picture criteria.
If you believe an image should be listed as a valued picture, please add it below to the current nominations section.
For promotion, if an image is listed here for about seven days with four or more opinions in support (including the nominator), and the consensus is in its favor, it can be added to the http://wiki.w2n.net/wikipedia/Valued pictures list. Note, however, that anonymous votes are generally disregarded, as are opinions of sockpuppets. If necessary, decisions about close candidacies will be made on a case-by-case basis.
The archive contains all opinions and comments collected on this page, and also nomination results.
If you nominate an image here, please consider also uploading and nominating it at Commons, to help ensure that the pictures can be used not just in the English Wikipedia but on all other Wikimedia projects as well.

How to nominate
Step 1 - Evaluate
The submissions will be evaluated using the criteria listed on http://wiki.w2n.net/wikipedia/What is a valued picture? Please read the criteria before submitting a picture to help cut down on the number of candidates that have a low chance of making it. If you are unsure if your picture will fulfill the criteria, please consider adding it to http://wiki.w2n.net/wikipedia/Picture peer review for initial assessment.
Step 2 - Create subpage
Create a page to place the image on; this page needs to be a subpage of http://wiki.w2n.net/wikipedia/Valued picture candidates. To create your own subpage, add a title for the image you want to nominate in the form below (for example http://wiki.w2n.net/wikipedia/Valued picture candidates/Southern Right Whale) and click the "Create new nomination" button.
Step 2.5 - Transclude and link
Transclude the newly created subpage to the Valued picture candidate list (direct link).
Step 3 - Update image
On the nominated image's page use the 'Edit page' button to add the vpc template like so: {{VPC|title}} (placing in "title" the first text typed above) for example: http://wiki.w2n.net/wikipedia/Valued picture candidates/Southern Right Whale. This inserts the valued pictures candidate template, to let the original contributor and other interested parties know that the image is up for voting.
Step 4 - Review a nomination
This project only exists because users devote time to review nominations. After nominating an image, please consider reviewing some other nominations below. Please keep the criteria in mind when doing so.
- If you approve of a picture, write Support followed by your reasons.
- If you oppose a nomination, write Oppose followed by your reasons. All objections should be accompanied by a specific rationale that, if addressed, would make you support the image.
- If you think a nominated image obviously fails the valued picture criteria, write Speedy close followed by your reasons. Nominations may be closed early if this is the case.
- To change your opinion, strike it out (with <s>...</s>) rather than removing it.
Recommendations added early in the process may be disregarded if they do not address concerns and/or improvements that arise later in the debate. Reviewers are advised to monitor the progress of a nomination and update their votes accordingly.
Please remember to be civil, not to bite the newbies and to comment on the image, not the person.

- But is the facade that important at all? I see a value in that the subject of the image is the place where Anne Frank lived (building, street, canal, trees, light), not the facade of the building alone. I find the cold winter/spring light quite fortunate. Elekhh (talk) 13:14, 22 February 2010 (UTC)

- An image's encyclopedic value is given priority over its artistic value. EV is more important than appearence for VPC. - ☩Damërung ☩. -- 23:52, 17 January 2010 (UTC)
- Does it really has such high EV? What does it tell the reader other than that the Zoo has a desolate entrance gateway area? Elekhh (talk) 00:05, 18 January 2010 (UTC)
- I think the EV is that it's the front gate of the number one zoo in America, and a regionally very well known sight. Also, I went and took the picture due to a request for it during Columbus Zoo and Aquarium's GA review (check the talk page of the article). Yes, the weather was a little dreary that day, but otherwise there would have been long lines of people in the way of a quality image of the gate itself. As for the sky and asphault, could I just upload a cropped version, and maybe try to play with the colors a little? - Adolphus79 (talk) 20:59, 18 January 2010 (UTC)
- Technical manipulation is generally discouraged: the image should present the subject as acurately as possible. But it should be rotated counter-clockwise to bring it to horizontal position. That will improve the quality. Croping will be difficult because it will lead to loss of important detail, like the human scale on the right. I would attempt however croping off the white bit on the bottom which is most distracting. If you think the crop is not clearly better you can upload it with different file name and propose it as Alt. Elekhh (talk) 21:11, 18 January 2010 (UTC)
- OK... rotated 0.5 degrees, top & bottom cropped slightly & very minor gamma fix (just to try to brighten it up a little)... didn't want to ovrewrite the original, in case it was too much of a change... - Adolphus79 (talk) 21:25, 18 January 2010 (UTC)
- I think Alt is much better and that it was worth the effort. Changed my previous vote for original only. I stay neutral on Alt however, as I don't have enough background knowledge on the topic to judge its EV. Elekhh (talk) 22:28, 18 January 2010 (UTC)
- Oppose The significance of the subject does not mean the image has encyclopedic value. TBO, the gate does not represent the zoo as well as an aerial photograph of the entire zoo would. --ZooFari 23:57, 27 January 2010 (UTC)

- No, it goes up every holiday season, usually around November, then it's taken down in January or February. Then the next year, it goes up again. The current candle is supposed to last until 2014, then they'll probably have to build a new one, but it's not up all year long, only around the holiday season. Maybe I should try to make that clearer in the article. In any event, the Peace Candle is still up and will be for about a week, I think, so I'll see if I can get another shot... — Hunter Kahn 17:15, 10 February 2010 (UTC)

- Comment - There is more than just the spiral Dreamcast logo though. What about the SEGA logo on the front of the console? And the Windows CE logo? AirRaidPatrol 84 (talk) 13:02, 13 December 2009 (UTC)
- The logos are not the main aspect of the photo. The subjects are the controller and console; the logos are incidental to these subjects. It's similar to this photo of Times Square
The
Microsoft logo is not copyrightable because it consists solely of text and simple shapes; it is however trademarked, which is different from copyright
that I took: the billboards comprise the scene, but the scene is not comprised of just a billboard. Incidentally, the Sega logo is not copyrightable, as it's simply text or simple shapes. I'm surprised the Dreamcast logo is set as fair use (in fact I question that decision), b/c it is limited to a typeface and simple shape. But again, this comes down to the fact that the logos are not that main subjects of the image; it just so happens that 2 of the three logos are not copyrightable to begin with (the Windows CE logo - but only when paired with the Windows window (otherwise it's only typeface) - is copyrighted). upstateNYer 00:11, 14 December 2009 (UTC)

- Support Alt1, Oppose Original. I am delighted my photo has been nominated for Valued Picture. The original was taken just as a snapshot using a cheap P&S camera, whereas the Alt1 was taken with an SLR in a studio setup, solely for Wikimedia. I believe the lighting in the original is worse because I used direct flash. You can see the blown highlights near the edges, and the overall contrast is very harsh. Sita. The painting depicts multiple events in the battle against the three-headed demon general Trisiras, in bottom left - Trisiras is beheaded by the monkey-companion of Rama -
Hanuman.
- Reason
- Rather strange image as it is a depiction of the great climax war of the Hindu epic Ramayana (there are only 2 Hindu epics) by a Muslim artist Sahibdin from the Mewar school of Rajput painting. It is high resolution. Also a FP at commons and Turkish encyclopedia, but a failed FPC here as it got only 4 supports, including the nominator.

Original-
Strong desingularization of
X: = (x2 − y3 = 0)⊂
W: = â„
2. Observe that the resolution does not stop after the first blowing-up, when the strict transform is smooth, but when it is simple normal crossings with the exceptional divisors.
- Reason
- Only image in the article in which it is used. Most of the images in Internet tend to have only the resolution of singularities but not the rest of the process to make the excetional divisor simple normal crossings.

- Comment. I find the labelling somewhat space inefficient. Have you tried with double row labels? I also wonder if it wouldn't be more advantageous to have the four images separate, so that there is a flexibility to layout these in a horizontal row or array as well. Original - The Blue-and-yellow Macaw is a member of the group of large Neotropical parrots known as macaws. It breeds in forest of tropical South America from Trinidad and Venezuela south to Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, and Paraguay.
- Reason
- Very nice image of bird in the wild. Educational and possibly rarely captured flying position. Some sharpness issues would prevenet it become FP, but is fully satisfactory for illustrating the article in a very compelling way.

Original - The
baroque Vaux le Vicomte Castel, Maincy, France. One of the most influential buildings of the 17th century. (Built 1658-1661)
- Reason
- Very high quality image of an important French castle. The lighting is very good and the background exceptional. Even at small size it makes the viewer want to know more. Would not qualify for FP as it is 27 pixels short of the minimum 1000px resolution.
